[EN] The higher education institutions use scientific and multidisciplinary electronic publication with an anonymous review process and free access to spread technical and scientific knowledge. The Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB) has two electronic journals with the aim of provoking, in young people, the search for wisdom, scientific spirit, respect for authorship and boosting reading and writing skills. This paper presents an exploratory research that evaluated the student's production and publication from IPB by applying a questionary about scientific literacy in the first semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. Participated 102 individuals, majority women, with Portuguese nationality, undergraduate students from Higher School of Education of IPB. The analysis revealed that 71 (69,6%) students have difficulties linked to reading and comprehension skills, just as 82 (80,4%) with scientific writing. That aspect may concern a shortage that debate characteristics of scientific reading, interpretation, and publication. Also, 85 (83.3%) students had not yet published any article, which may require scientific literacy for a better understanding of the scientific method. However, it was possible to note several other types of production developed within the scope of school activities, which may come to stimulate scientific literacy. The main goal of this thesis is to verify and quantify the impact of monetary policy Quantitative Easing on firms´ capital structure. It will be presented theories about conventional and unconventional monetary theory. Following, it will be analyze the implementation of Quantitative Easing by a few central banks, like the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England. Finally, it will be presented a description of the prominent theories of capital structure (trade-off theory and pecking-order). Our results go against existing literature. According to our results the Quantitative Easing impact does not have statistically significance impact on the financing decision policy

Sagitta bipunctata, Mesosagitta minima e Krohnitta subtilis apenas no inverno. A variabilidade espaço-temporal dos grupos zooplanctônicos revela a existência de diferentes cadeias pelágicas no entorno da REBIO.The zooplankton is composed of holoplanktonic organisms, being the Copepoda dominant, followed by the carnivores Chaetognata and the detritivores Larvacea, and also of meroplanktonic organisms like the larvae of invertebrates and fish. This work aims to analyze the planktonic communities in the surroundings of the Arvoredo Marine Protected Area (REBIO Arvoredo) in relation to the variability of the oceanographic structure of the euphotic zone. Within the MAArE Project, 11 oceanographic stations were carried out on the shallow central shelf of Santa Catarina, in the summer and winter of 2014. The CTD and water bottles of Van Dorn were used for sampling oceanographic data. The zooplankton was sampled by horizontal hauls, with a 200 μm cylindrical-conical net and further sub-sampled and quantified. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA), described the seasonal variation, being summer with warm, stratified, saline and oligotrophic waters, opposed to winter with homogeneous waters, high chlorophyll concentration and silicates. Copepoda were 99% of the plankton on the coast in the summer. On the other hand, the Chaetognatha and larvae of crustaceans were important in the intermediate region. The small and detritivores Larvacea were abundant on the shelf. In winter, Copepoda occurred throughout the region. Other microcrustaceans (Cladocera) replaced the Larvacea on the shelf. The identification, life stage and biometry of chaetognats, performed with the ZooScan, indicated the dominance of Flaccisagitta enflata and Ferosagitta hispida (the largest species) in 2014, Sagitta Friderici and Sagitta tenuis also occurred in both seasons. Sagitta bipunctata, Minimum mesosagitta and Krohnitta subtilis only in winter. Chaetognatha were in young stages throughout 2014, showing the population stability and reproduction during summer and winter. Assemblages of these carnivores occupied the Subtropical Shelf Water (STSW), under the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) intrusion effect in summer and terrigenous input in the winter. The spatio-temporal variability of the zooplankton groups revealed the existence of different pelagic chains in the vicinity of REBIO

Characterizing Attention Cascades in WhatsApp Groups

An important political and social phenomena discussed in several countries, like India and Brazil, is the use of WhatsApp to spread false or misleading content. However, little is known about the information dissemination process in WhatsApp groups. Attention affects the dissemination of information in WhatsApp groups, determining what topics or subjects are more attractive to participants of a group. In this paper, we characterize and analyze how attention propagates among the participants of a WhatsApp group. An attention cascade begins when a user asserts a topic in a message to the group, which could include written text, photos, or links to articles online. Others then propagate the information by responding to it. We analyzed attention cascades in more than 1.7 million messages posted in 120 groups over one year. Our analysis focused on the structural and temporal evolution of attention cascades as well as on the behavior of users that participate in them. We found specific characteristics in cascades associated with groups that discuss political subjects and false information. For instance, we observe that cascades with false information tend to be deeper, reach more users, and last longer in political groups than in non-political groups.Comment: Accepted as a full paper at the 11th International ACM Web Science Conference (WebSci 2019). Hydrodynamic characterization of bubble column using Dynamical High Order Decomposition approach

Bubble columns are present in several applications, such as chemical and biochemical reactors and petrochemical and environmental engineering industries. This variety of applications is why understanding the bubble columns' dynamics is essential. This paper aims to describe a 2D bubble column system by a data-driven method to comprehend its dynamics better. We provided a set of simulations considering different superficial velocities to produce training data. With this data set, we compared two approaches: the Fast Fourier transformation (FFT) and the High-Order Dynamic Mode Decomposition (HODMD). Our results showed that FFT could not adequately describe the system as it has been done for a long time in the industry. However, with a few measurement points, HODMD can well represent and reconstruct the dynamics of this complex dispersed multiphase flow system.Comment: 20 page
